Kuopion Taiteiden yössä 28. elokuuta 2026 on esillä neljän Valokuva- ja mediataideyhdistys Valmed ry:n jäsentaiteilijan teoksia. Teknologinen kehitys näkyy taiteilijoiden teoksissa niin merkityksissä kuin menetelmissä. Yhden illan ajan Kuopion taidemuseo KUMMAn takapihalla esitetään videoita, tilallisia mediataideteoksia, sekä ääniveistos. Roberto Fuscon, Ulla-Mari Lindströmin, Jaakko Metsäpellon ja Tuukka Pasasen teoksissa kuljetaan runollisesti yötä kohti käsitellen muuttuvan ympäristön herättämää surua, levottomuutta ja tulevaisuuden epävarmuutta. Toisaalta teokset myös tarjoavat suunnan kohti valoisampaa huomista leikin, toiveikkaiden päätösten ja lohdullisen kauneuden tukemana.
Aikakausien synty ja loppu näkyy Jaakko Metsäpellon ja Tuukka Pasasen teoksissa eri tavoin. Metsäpellon ääniveistos ikuistaa tärkeän taitekohdan siirtymässä kohti kestävää energiantuotantoa. Teos muodostuu keväällä 2025 suljetun Helsingin Salmisaaren hiilivoimalan viimeisinä toimintapäivinä taltioidusta äänistä, sekä pyyhkäisyelektronimikroskopiaa hyödyntävistä hiilen polton pienhiukkasia tutkivista kuvista.
Tuukka Pasasen installaatiossa käydään kronologisesti läpi ihmisen aiheuttamaa muutosta ilmastossa ja ympäristössä. Ajankohtaisia Euroopan ennätyshelteitä käsittelevä teos aavistelee, mikä meitä tien päässä odottaa. Milloin kiertotiet loppuvat, milloin täytyy kääntyä takaisin, milloin sekin on liian myöhäistä?
Roberto Fusco rakentaa jäljitelmän historiallisesta myrskystä laivapäiväkirjamerkintöjen, fysiikkaan perustuvien ympäristösimulaatioiden ja generatiivisten työkalujen avulla. Videoteos tavoittelee vahvaa aisti- ja tunnekokemusta myrskystä, jota kukaan ei ole kokenut mutta joka saattaa olla tulevaisuuden uusi normaali. Voiko taide auttaa käsittelemään tähän uuteen epävakaaseen tilanteeseen liittyviä pelon, avuttomuuden, (epä)toivon, ihastuksen tai kunnioituksen tunteita?
Ulla-Mari Lindströmin valokuva-animaatiossa leikki jatkuu arkisessa ympäristössä loputtomana toistona. Lapsen iloinen ja huoleton liike muodostaa vastaparin näyttelyn muille teoksille, joissa tulevaisuus näyttäytyy epävarmana ja maailman tila herättää huolta. Teos muistuttaa, että kaiken levottomuuden keskellä lasten tulisi saada olla lapsia: leikkiä, ihmetellä ja elää huoletonta arkea. Juuri näistä pienistä mutta merkityksellisistä hetkistä rakentuu toivo tulevaisuudesta. Katse kannattaa suunnata myös tähän hetkeen eikä vasta huomiseen.

At Kuopio’s Night of the Arts on 28 August 2026, four member artists of the Photography and Media Art Association Valmed ry exhibit their recent works, which all explore and reflect technological development from different points of view. Video works, spatial media art works and a sound sculpture will be on display for one evening in the backyard of the Kuopio Art Museum KUMMA. In the works of Roberto Fusco, Ulla-Mari Lindström, Jaakko Metsäpelto, and Tuukka Pasanen, we move poetically toward the night, addressing the grief, restlessness, and uncertainty about the future in rapidly changing environment. At the same time, there’s an element of comforting beauty that reminds us about the possibility of a brighter tomorrow, the importance of play and hopeful decisions that are being made.
End of an era and the beginning of a new one appear in different ways in the works of Jaakko Metsäpelto and Tuukka Pasanen. Metsäpelto captures an important turning point in energy transition with a sound sculpture that is created out of the sounds of Helsinki’s now defunct Salmisaari coal power plant, where he got access to during its final days of operation in the spring of 2025, and scanning electron microscopy images of particles emitted from a coal-fired power station.
Tuukka Pasanen’s installation chronologically examines human-caused changes in the climate and the environment. The work addresses the current record-breaking heat waves in Europe and the scenarios we might be facing in the future. When the problem becomes impossible to ignore? When we have to turn back? When the point of no return has been reached?
Roberto Fusco builds an imitation of a historical storm using ship logbook entries, physics-based environmental simulations, and generative tools. The video work aims to create an emotionally powerful sensory experience of a storm that no one has actually experienced, but which may become the new normal in the future. Can art help process the fear, helplessness, hope, fascination, or awe connected to this new unstable situation?
In Ulla-Mari Lindström’s photographic animation, play continues in an endless cycle in an everyday environment. The child’s joyful and carefree movement forms a counterpoint to the exhibition’s other works, in which the future appears uncertain and the state of the world is a cause for concern. The work reminds us that, amidst all the unrest, children should be allowed to be children: to play, to wonder, and to live a carefree everyday life. It is precisely from these small but meaningful moments that hope for the future is built. It is also important to be able to be in the moment, rather than only towards tomorrow.
